What is "The Pit"?
You're a janitor working down a bottomless hole, scrubbing oil stains and polishing rusty metal. One day, your 5 minute cigarette break is rudely interrupted... by a star? falling STRAIGHT DOWN THE HOLE?!
You suddenly find yourself hurriedly jumping and sliding down, from derelict metal structures to darkened concrete extrusions: with no possible escape nor any end in sight.
The Pit is a first person falling game, where you'll need to make clever use of the different structures to make your way down as fast as possible without breaking your legs, or the rest of you.
How does the game work?
Aside from the usual falling and walking mechanics, the player can make use of two unique interactions to go even faster. They can slide on every angled platform to avoid losing momentum, and to generate even more! Jumping will always take the angle of the platform the player is currently on into account, and allow them to gain -EVEN- -MORE- -SPEED- when jumping off a slope.
But be careful, since going too fast for too long will have you turn into a red splatter. To circumvent that, make sure to slide or land on platforms periodically OR make use of the stretched blue canvas landing pads, which will completely prevent any fall damage.
If you get hurt: don't worry! You'll automatically regain your focus (and health) after a few seconds. However, taking damage again before regenerating WILL KILL YOU... so do worry a little.
Visual and sound art direction
We wanted to really convey the whole drama of the ridiculous situation the player finds themselves in. To do so: we decided that every feedback they would see or hear would correspond to important in game events, with coherent force (a falling star SHOULD be bright and loud), and would use real life sensations felt when falling at high speeds (loss of consciousness and shortness of breath, for example).
Visually, we opted to use a dark industrial universe that would easily welcome gigantic and odd structures with a huge variety of different shapes. Derelict textures and failing lighting contribute to making the player feel like they are abandoned by their employers, that show them no more support than they do the pit itself.
For sound design, we made almost every single event evolutive to convey the varying degrees of speed and danger felt by the player at any moment.
To truly offer the feeling of loss of control when falling at high speeds, both visual and sound feedbacks can reach extremes where they'll go from positive indicators of high speed to blinding and deafening filters: making it very clear to the player that they are IN DANGER of becoming splattered on the next solid structure.
